Rowan Williams on Dag Hammarskjöld: Unforgettable Insights

Some thoughts and words are altogether haunting—even a year after publication. Dr. Rowan Williams, retired not long ago from his post as Archbishop of Canterbury, now Master of Magdalene College (Cambridge), contributed some time ago to a New York Times inquiry called “Our Compass.” It brought authors of his caliber together to think aloud and share something of their values. Focusing on Hammarskjöld, Dr. Williams described him as “an adult politician in a not very adult world. One could say that he expected too much of professional politicians and all those whose job it was to defend local interests. But he offered a perspective without which all politics is empty.” A superb piece of thinking-feeling. Do take time to read it.
